SquareTrade © AP6.0 Here's a purebred, Slingerland pedigree 12" (deep) x 15" (head diameter), 12 center lug (marching) Snare drum, that is 100% complete, original, and most importantly fully and impressively functional. The most impressive aspect of this drum is the snare application mechanics: Twelve (12) strands of 16" non-metal (gut?) snare wires, each wire individually tuned runs across the snare side head of this drum, and past the heads, supported by serious heavy duty and elaborate throw, tension, and adjustment hardware that you can pretty well see in the photographs. (Photos # 1, 3, and 7-9) The shell on this drum consists of two shell units, the first, inner-most section is a maple/mahogany/maple, three ply shell, with the innermost ply being gorgeous maple, that has been clear lacquered only. The interior ply shows an excellent classic maple grain. Around the three ply inner shell appears to be a cushioning shell made by an approximate 1/4" ply of cushioning rubber or insulation material sandwiched between two plys of mahogany. The exterior shell forms the bearing edge which appears to be 45 degrees, and is quite sharp. The drum bears the black and silver Niles, Illinois badge, Serial no. 566814. There is also a sticker (see photo) identifying this drum as a "TDR Drum", made "by Slingerland, Niles, Illinois, USA ". The sound of this snare drum is extra-ordinary. Incredible "Pop", "Whack" sounds. Huge sound projection and a very tight, articulate, VERY audible snare response. But for sympthony snare drums, that cost thousands of dollars there is no comparison as between this vintage snare, and anything on the market today. No doubt the wrap is dirty, despite attempts to clean it- it no longer will sparkle for me. The guts of this drum, however are in excellent condition- from the shell, to the entire snare mechanism. Not only is this a vintage drum made of the finest materials, where no corner's were cut, (for instance the 12 tension points on the batter side, and 12 on the snare side of the drum, the 15" head size, etc. ) but the drum plays beautifully.
